In this video, we will explore What is Assertiveness
You don’t always have to be passive or aggressive as there is the third option as well.
Assertiveness is often seen as the balance point between passive and aggressive behaviour.
Being assertive means being able to stand up for your own or other people’s rights in a calm and positive way, without being either aggressive.
Our everyday life is filled with interactions with other people and with situations that we have to respond to. We can respond to situations by being passive, aggressive or assertive.
Imagine that you have been just asked to do some extra job at work. If you chose to be passive then you will simply accept the work even if you know that you will not get it done.
You can also respond aggressively saying that you already have more work than you can do and refusing to take on extra work.
Or finally, you can be assertive. This means stating the current situation with your workload and if work needs to be completed on time then additional help will be needed.
Out of all these 3 responses being assertive is probably the best one as it clearly stated the facts while still trying to be helpful.
Here are some characteristics that describe assertive person:
First Being open in expressing ideas, thoughts and feelings and encouraging others to do the same.
Second Treating everyone equally
Third Being able to admit mistakes and apologise.
Fourth Accepting responsibility and not being afraid to make a decision.
Fifth Expressing appreciation to others who are doing good work.
When you become more assertive you will feel better because you will be expressing who you are and how you feel.
I hope that you enjoyed this video and I was able to give you a quick summary of what Assertiveness is and why it’s important. _________________
